Survey Questions and Answers #29 and #30

  1. Gender identity is a matter of choice. True or False?

Utambulisho wa jinsia ni jambo la kuchagua. Ndio au Hapana?

여성, 남성 ( gender) 선택일 뿐이다.

The answers to both our questions today are fairly straightforward according to the Bible. Unfortunately, the problem we have when we want to agree with statements like #29 and #30 is that we don’t really want to go against the views of our “enlightened society”. The fact is that deep down we believe that the ideas of the society are superior to the Bible and therefore should interpret it. When in fact the Bible should always interpret society and culture and therefore transform them.

So, if we are to take God’s Word as having the final say in all we do or believe as Christians then we will often find that we are at odds with what our society or our culture says we should do or believe. What does the Bible have to say about whether Gender identity is a matter of choice?

Last week we read from Genesis chapter one and I hope we all agree with that account of creation. In Genesis 1:27 we read that God created human beings in His image. He created them as male and female. If we now agree with the values of society that say each individual can determine their own gender then, we are in effect saying that God was mistaken when he made Michael and really, he is actually Michelle now because that is how he identifies himself or herself.

In Matthew 19:4 Jesus clearly agrees with the Genesis account of creation when he says, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,” Therefore, I think we can say that this statement is FALSE. We do not get to arbitrarily choose our own gender because, it is essentially a gift from God which He gives to us when we are created.

  1. The Bible’s condemnation of homosexual behavior doesn’t apply today. True or False?

Shutumu ya Biblia juu ya tabia ya ushoga haitumiki leo. Ndio au Hapana?

성경에 나오는 homosexual 행위의 죄는  현대인에게는 적용되지 않는다.

We can go to the Bible again and see that this is quite clearly a FALSE statement and that the Bible’s condemnation of homosexual behaviour still applies even today. And it will also apply until Christ returns in glory.

Again, beginning in Genesis this time chapter 2 and verses 18-25 we read, the basis for our rejection of homosexual behaviour. The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. 23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” 24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.According to this passage the only acceptable form of sexual expression is to be found in the One Man – One Woman marriage relationship. And this principle is also confirmed in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians chapter 7 which I made reference to last Friday.

What this passage in Genesis also clearly means is that homosexual behaviour (by this I mean acting on the temptation of same sex attraction and not just effeminate behaviour) is not in agreement with God’s original design for human beings and His intention for marital relationships. Since homosexuality is a result of sins impact upon creation that also means it is condemned for all time. The extent of the prohibition is not only limited to males but also to females as is taught in Romans 1:26-27, “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error.

And finally, a Bible passage such as 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 which says, “Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. This clearly states that those who are unrepentantly practicing homosexual acts along with those who commit any of the other sexual sins will NOT inherit the kingdom of God. The good news found in verse 11 is that, God will save anyone, including those who commit sexual sins, if they turn from their sin and trust in Jesus.
